Ensemble
The Magician
6-part wind ensemble
After the opening fanfares a light-hearted melody becomes increasingly chromatic, leading to a darker section before the fanfares return with different harmonies. An open-scored piece, it is suitable for different combinations of instruments. Available as a score in C or transposed. Winner of the London Consorts of Winds Composition Competition 2013.

Wildflower
Wildflower is in a single movement, lasting about 9 minutes. While there is no fixed programme, the listener may imagine the first shoots of a poppy in the tentative opening phrases, or a breeze stirring in the rustling arpeggios. The three notes of the opening viola motif are developed in several melodies, which take the listener through different moods. The motif is eventually turned upside down as the music changes metre. The influence of folk music is felt in the use of Dorian and Mixolydian modes, as well as in dance rhythms. The final burst of energy imprints a blaze of colour on our minds, which lingers as the music returns to the opening calm.

Gloria tibi Trinitas
Organ
After a loud introduction, this weaves running semiquavers over the plainsong melody which appears firstly in the pedal, then in fifths in the reeds. After a gentle middle section, fragments of earlier passages emerge and gather strength towards the grand finale. Written for organist James Anderson-Besant and premiered at Gloucester Cathedral in 2017.
